The first British Dodgeball Championship was played on 13th May 2007. Leeds Met Carnegie won the tournament and they are now the official UK No. 1 team.
There are 36 Universities with dodgeball societies, 5 adult leagues already running and 5 more due to start before the end of 2007 and about 20 independant adult dodgeball clubs and teams. More and more schools and local authorities are starting up dodgeball clubs for younger players.
For those who don't know dodgeball, in the UK it is played in teams of six, mixed male and female aged over 16, with 3 balls in play. UK Dodge Ball Association matches are played as a set of seven 2-minute games. The sport uses UKDBA dodgeballs, which are lightweight and designed not to hurt. The courts are 24 feet wide and a minimum of 42 feet long, with a 2-foot Dead Zone dividing the teams.
The object of the game is to eliminate the opposing players by hitting them with a ball. If you catch a throw, the thrower is 'Out' and one of the catcher's eliminated players comes back on.
The game is fast, action-packed and fun. Players of all abilities can play with or against each other. As long as you can throw, catch or dodge you can play dodgeball.
