Laughing all the way to the bank

Is Labour scared of the banks? First the Northern Rock bailout, now Brown meeting with bank bosses over the credit 'crisis'.

The banks are private businesses, they've screwed things up pursuing unsustainable profit margins. Like the car makers did. And they're still following the same path - two interst rate cuts and the banks' response has been to hike up fees on mortgage deals and lend less. Talk about laughing all the way to bank.

Whatever Brown promises them, the response of this super-secretative bunch of City fat cats will be to work out how far they can profit from the crisis at the expense of their customers.

Perhaps Gordon was in with the bankers discussing overdraft facilities, and trying to make sure he doesn't get hit for £35 when their water rates direct debit gets bounced at Labour HQ.
