What's new on the Sweeble boards?

Sweebler teacher is critical of government plans to get school-leavers to pledge allegiance to the Queen: "To them, the Queen is an old lady in a big hat who, like grandma, is wheeled for Christmas lunch."

Why isn't Dr Horrible available in the UK?

Posted on Mon 21 Jul 2008, 22:26 by newsghost SweebstarSweebstarSweebstarSweebstarSweebstar

Don't you like your British fans, Joss - did we not buy enough copies of Firefly? Are we not keeping the Angel and Buffy flame burning brightly enough for you? First you put your spanking new mini series - Dr Horrible - up on its own website...

Laughing all the way to the bank

Posted on Tue 15 Apr 2008, 09:32 by newsghost SweebstarSweebstarSweebstarSweebstarSweebstar

Is Labour scared of the banks? First the Northern Rock bailout, now Brown meeting with bank bosses over the credit 'crisis'. The banks are private businesses, they've screwed things up pursuing unsustainable profit margins. Like the car makers...

Ban on school army visits is ridiculous

Posted on Tue 25 Mar 2008, 10:36 by Teacher Sweebstar

We don't do ourselves any favours as teachers when we start talking about banning the army from visiting schools. The motion to ban army visits as 'cynical recruitment drives' targetted at poorer kids is ridiculous. What about the thousands of...

Citizenship oaths for teenagers

Posted on Tue 11 Mar 2008, 09:43 by Teacher Sweebstar

The idea that making school-leavers swear an oath to Queen and country will somehow make them more committed citizens as they set off into adulthood is ridiculous. We're talking about the Facebook/Big Brother generation. To them, the Queen is an...

British citizenship smoke-and-mirrors

Posted on Wed 20 Feb 2008, 14:18 by newsghost SweebstarSweebstarSweebstarSweebstarSweebstar

If you can't do anything else, launch a so-called Britishness test for immigrants - knowing the coverage will obscure the reality. New govt plans for would-be British citizens to 'prove their worth' through long stay, good deeds, paying extra...

Gambler case shows up casino plan

Posted on Thu 14 Feb 2008, 08:13 by newsghost SweebstarSweebstarSweebstarSweebstarSweebstar

The gambler taking William Hill to court for letting him gamble away £2m makes a mockery of the Government's insistence that the industry could ensure 'responsible gambling' at super-casinos. If he loses his case, it means William Hill and other...

Boeing 777 - let's speculate!

Posted on Sun 20 Jan 2008, 15:27 by Specul8 No Sweebstar rating yet

Credit to the pilots and crew. Credit to the people that trained them. Now for some theories... some more speculative than others! 1. Contaminated fuel from Beijing. Underpaid ground staff and procurement officials in Beijing run a profitable...

The Last Samurai (sword)

Posted on Wed 12 Dec 2007, 11:14 by newsghost SweebstarSweebstarSweebstarSweebstarSweebstar

The government has announced a ban on importing or selling samurai swords from April - unless you're able to convince the police you're a "serious collector" or bona fide martial arts supplier. There was a 12-week consultation (apparently) on the...

Welcome home, Miss

Posted on Tue 4 Dec 2007, 10:54 by Momma SweebstarSweebstarSweebstar

I'm really glad teacher Gillian Gibbons was released from prison and is back in the UK. But I suspect that whatever the ordeal of the past weeks in Sudan has been like for her - being arrested, appearing in court, being sent to jail - it'll be...

It's ok England, I'm not looking...

Posted on Thu 22 Nov 2007, 09:08 by newsghost SweebstarSweebstarSweebstarSweebstarSweebstar

I'm sorry England, it's my fault - not McLaren's or Carson's or Gerrard's. I should have remembered that every England match I've managed to be home to watch this year, they've lost. It's nothing to do with poor playing, or weak defending, or...

Gordy Brown.. you are victim of our time..

Posted on Thu 15 Nov 2007, 02:07 by Scrutineer SweebstarSweebstarSweebstarSweebstarSweebstar

I don't want me or mine to be killed in a bomb attack, or any other attack for that matter. OK. For those of us who grew up in the 70's and 80's, the threat of nuclear destruction or IRA bombing was far more real and far more worrying than the...

Lawyers and priests unite!

Posted on Wed 7 Nov 2007, 10:47 by Teacher Sweebstar

I admit to not understanding much about what's going on in Pakistan right now - but lawyers leading a revolution? Solicitors taking to the streets in protest? Blimey!! Last month is was monks leading demonstrations in Burma. It's always the quiet...

Drive faster - please!

Posted on Mon 15 Oct 2007, 09:51 by Teacher Sweebstar

My pet hate right now is drivers who insist on driving five miles and hour UNDER the speed limit because of speed cameras. I regularly travel a road that starts at 60mph, then drops to 50mph (when the cameras start), then 40 and finally 30mph. But...

Time for Crozier to take 70% of blame

Posted on Tue 9 Oct 2007, 09:17 by newsghost SweebstarSweebstarSweebstarSweebstarSweebstar

Listening to Adam Crozier (million-pound-a-year boss of Royal Mail) on the radio this morning made me angry. I have no real idea why the postal workers are on strike, but I recognise the words of an over-paid and under-talented manager when I hear...

Mad mortgage merry-go-round

Posted on Fri 5 Oct 2007, 09:34 by Teacher Sweebstar

Another report is talking about the high cost of buyng a house in the UK - five times the average first-time buyers salary. Interestingly the report also says the same house will generally costs 30% less a month to rent than to pay a mortgage on...

Brown, election - am I bovvered?

Posted on Mon 24 Sep 2007, 15:10 by Momma SweebstarSweebstarSweebstar

Ask me if I care whether Brown calls an election next month or not... go on, ask me... Obviously the answer is I couldn't care less. And I'm not the only one. Not that you'd think that from TV and radio's obsession with the 'will he, won't he?'...

Rugby..England dead in the water

Posted on Fri 14 Sep 2007, 21:06 by Scrutineer SweebstarSweebstarSweebstarSweebstarSweebstar

Half time. South Africa 20, England 0. Is it me or do the England team look like they've all been pulled out of retirement? Poor kicking, slow out the rucks and not a sign of a fast break. The forwards have failed to penetrate the South African...

Why our future won't be anything like Star Trek

Posted on Wed 12 Sep 2007, 08:57 by Teacher Sweebstar

Had to share this link to list of 8 top Sci-Fi futures and why they'll never happen. If only because no 1 on the list is the most familiar to any other Star Trek/Whedon fans out there: #1.A Spacefaring Intergalactic Megasociety Defining Features:...

Sickening media response to McCanns homecoming

Posted on Mon 10 Sep 2007, 09:38 by newsghost SweebstarSweebstarSweebstarSweebstarSweebstar

Sitting in a hotel restaurant having breakfast Sunday morning with wall-to-wall McCanns on the TV. Sky had helicopters tailing them, a reporter stalking them on the plane, every man and his dog speculating on what the Portuguese police might have...

Mercury prize wobbles

Posted on Tue 4 Sep 2007, 14:18 by Momma SweebstarSweebstarSweebstar

Just had another look at the Mercury Prize shortlist (the winner announcement is due later today) and, apart from the Artic Monkeys again, I can't see anyone I'd want to give this year's prize to. I bought and loved the Monkey's second. I bought...
